Best Ski Poles in 2022 (Helpful Buying Guide)

Ski Poles

You may look at ski poles as an unimportant piece of equipment, but they are as essential as your ski boots. They provide balance and propelling force for downhill skiing, are needed for climbing and descending the backcountry, and are critical tools for Nordic skiing. Even snowboarders make use of ski poles!

Finding the right pair of ski poles can be tough because there are a lot of factors to consider. Thus, to help you find the best ski poles easily, we have come up with a list of the best ones, which will provide you with the right balance of everything and make your skiing experience worthwhile.

1. Black Diamond Razor Carbon Pro

Black Diamond Razor Carbon Pro

Shaft Material: Aluminum Upper, Carbon Fiber Lower

Shaft Diameter: 14mm/12mm

Basket Type: Powder

The Black Diamond Razor Carbon Pro is our top choice when it comes to a balance of weight, performance, and durability. These are made for ski enthusiasts and even snowboarders who are ready for an adventure.

What we like about the Razor Carbon Pro is that they are constructed with both aluminum, and carbon fiber shaft that balances strength and weight. Their aluminum upper is thick at 14 mm, and the carbon lower is 12 mm thin and only weighs around 1 lb. and 2.4 ounces.

The Black Diamond’s Flicklock Pro will give you secure and grippy support for skiing and backpacking. The ski poles’ aluminum system is glove-friendly, easy to use, and reliable. The 4-inch powder baskets are for backcountry skiing, especially when in deep powder, and the straps release an ample amount of torque and pressure. This model has a safety feature to protect your hands, wrists, arms, and shoulders in the event of an impact. Additionally, these poles are height adjustable, so that you can maximize their performance on any type of terrain that you want to ski on.

What we do not like about the Black Diamond Razor Carbon Pro is that you need to be careful with the carbon fiber lower and avoid bashing it into a rock. Other than that, these poles will last long due to their quality construction. They will suit both beginners and intermediate skiers, whether at the resort or into the backcountry.

Shaft Material: Aluminum

Shaft Diameter: 16mm

The Salomon Brigade are some of the best kids’ ski poles. They are one of our go-to choices for kids to have a little more excitement and feel like pros.

Their plastic grip has been molded with a four-finger layout to enable a firm grip, even for those with small hands.

What we do not like about the Salomon Brigade Junior is that they are not suited for experienced young skiers, but rather for beginners. All in all, if you are looking for a high-end ski pole that is lightweight and durably constructed, the Brigade Junior is a good option.

3. LEKI Racing Kids Ski Pole

LEKI Racing Kids Ski Pole

Shaft Material: Aluminum

Shaft Width: 14mm

Basket Type: Junior Standard

The Leki Racing ski poles for kids are a really stylish piece of equipment that is not only for racing, but is also versatile enough to be an all-over-the-mountain kind of ski pole.

What we like about the Leki Racing kids’ ski poles is that they are made of a lightweight 14mm high-grade aluminum shaft that is stable, sturdy, and durable. This model has a steel tip for accurate planting and optimal grip in most terrains. It also has a comfortable PAS Hard grip with an adjustable strap and a security release. It looks good with its sleek graphics and is available in six lengths, from 33 inches to 41 inches, to accommodate young kids and teenagers.

What we do not like about the Leki Racing ski poles for kids is that the racing basket is a bit too small, which makes the ski poles inappropriate for deep powder or for drifting far off the trail. Other than that, these are a good option for a kid’s first pair of racing poles and will allow your child to advance their skiing abilities.

4. Salomon Kaloo Junior

Salomon Kaloo Junior

Shaft Material: Aluminum

Shaft Diameter: 14mm/16mm

Basket Type: Junior Standard

Another great choice for kids’ ski poles is the Salomon Kaloo Junior. These are great pieces of equipment if you are planning to let your kids ski on your next trip to the resort.

What we like about the Salomon Kaloo Junior is that they will ensure that your kid has the ultimate skiing experience due to the aluminum alloy shaft that is rigid, sturdy, and ergonomically sized for kids. With it, no need to worry about strains and fatigue of the arms because of the size and weight! This model is also constructed with a standard plastic grip to fit a child’s small hands, a junior tip, a junior strap that is attached near the grip to provide protection, and a standard junior basket. It comes in two colors with a gradient design, and is good for all-day recreational skiing.

What we do not like about the Kaloo Junior ski poles is that they do not have any advanced features for intermediate to experienced skiers due to their plain construction. However, these ski poles are lightweight, durable, and have an enhanced grip, which is perfect for a child.

Best for women

5. Rossignol Electra Light

Rossignol Electra Light

Shaft Material: Aluminum Dural

Shaft Diameter: 16mm

Basket Type: Standard

The Rossignol Electra Light is a women-specific ski pole designed for various terrains and is a great choice for that ultimate skiing experience.

What we like about the Electra Light ski poles for women is their durability and strength due to the aluminum Dural shaft construction, which has a very high strength-to-weight ratio and is quite stiff. This model has bi-injected components that can absorb the vibrations transmitted from the base of the pole, thus making it comfortable and providing a more secure grip. It also has an easily adjustable nylon strap to ensure that it stays with you during jump-offs. The Rossignol Electra Light come in a wide range of sizes to be able to accommodate most lady skiers.

What we do not like about the Rossignol Electra Light women’s ski poles is that they wear out easily if you do not handle them with care. Aside from this, these ski poles are geared towards lady skiers and can be used on any all-mountain terrains.

The ski poles only weigh about 210 grams, so you can swing them around effortlessly and without breaking your ski posture. Being 16mm wide, they are slim for easy handling. Besides, they come in a wide range of colors that can match your skis. Finally, the Arctic Lady ski poles come with removable and replaceable standard baskets and straps.

What we do not like about the Salomon Arctic Lady ski poles is that the paint will start to come off after several skiing sessions. Other than that, they are suitable for advanced and intermediate skiers who are looking to progress.

7. Atomic Cloud Women’s Ski Poles

Atomic Cloud Women's Ski Poles

Shaft Material: Aluminum

Shaft Diameter: 16mm

Basket Type: Standard

Another great choice for those looking to complete their skiing equipment without spending too much money on fancy poles is the Atomic Cloud women-specific ski poles.

What we like about the Atomic Cloud is that they are constructed with a durable 6061 grade aluminum shaft that is 16mm in diameter, which is a great balanced size for strength and weight. This pair features Atomic’s standard grip and strap, which are simple, but still offers a comfortable feel in your hand. The strap can be adjusted to allow you to tighten it across your wrist for a secure feel. Its 60mm Piste basket is durable and can effectively plant the pole on softer snow. It is not as wide as a powder basket, but it is more versatile and suited for any all-mountain lady skiers.

What we do not like about the Atomic Cloud is that this model is not as fancy as other women-specific ski poles, although that does not mean that it lacks in quality and performance. These ski poles from Atomic are a great choice for lady skiers who are looking for economical and functional skiing equipment.

Best for men

8. Black Diamond Carbon Compactor

Black Diamond Carbon Compactor

Shaft Material: Carbon Fiber

Shaft Diameter: 18mm

Basket Type: Powder

The Black Diamond Carbon Compactor is a super lightweight pole that suits touring, splitboarding, and even backpacking or hiking.

What we like about the Carbon Compactor is that this pole is easy to use and designed for quick transitions. Its Z-pole collapsible design allows the sections to lick into place with just a click. These sections collapse with a push of a button and snap into designated holes in the basket so it stays nicely folded together. In other words, deployment is fast and speeds up transition times.

This model also features a well-designed grip with ergonomically-designed sticky rubber extending down into its secondary grip position. The top of the handle is large and rounded, allowing a large surface to push against steep climbs. The powder basket is asymmetrically designed to be used on firm traverses. At 18 ounces per pair, the weight of the pole is so comfortable that you won’t even notice it on your pack. These poles are strong enough to be used on any skin track and will not weigh you down on the descent. Additionally, the Carbon Compactor has the ability to fold down into a very small 16 inches object, which is suitable for splitboarders who stash them inside their packs. Furthermore, the grip is nicely contoured with a classic grip design and rubber.

What we do not like about the Black Diamond Carbon Compactor is the non-adjustable length and the likeliness to chip and crack. Other than these concerns, the Carbon Compactor is a great choice for those looking for collapsible and lightweight poles that are also suitable for splitboarding.

9. K2 LockJaw Carbon Adjustable

K2 LockJaw Carbon Adjustable

Shaft Material: Carbon Fiber upper, Aluminum lower

Shaft Diameter: 16mm/14mm

Basket Type: Powder

The K2 LockJaw Carbon Adjustable is another quality lightweight ski pole that best suits the backcountry and is made with a whole new concept of functionality.

What we like about the LockJaw Carbon ski pole for men is its inclinometer and ruler markings on the pole’s upper section. The inclinometer is an important tool to determine how steep the terrain is or for knowing the slope angle, which is a critical factor in assessing avalanche hazard. The ruler markings are also useful for determining snow depth and layers, and allow you to keep an eye on some risk factors. Another feature that you can hardly notice is the little divot on the grip’s front upper part, which is designed for bindings that perfectly grab and flip the touring lock on the binding ties.

The K2 LockJaw’s lower shafts are easily joined, forming a 200-cm emergency probe. The model’s adjustment mechanism flawlessly works if you need to tighten or loosen, is easily adjustable without any tools, and is easily used even with gloves on. The grip on the ski pole is well-made and ergonomically shaped, and the strap has a safety release system and is very comfortable.

What we do not like about the K2 LockJaw Carbon Adjustable ski pole is that its aluminum construction is not as nimble as having an all-carbon ski pole. However, the swing weight is still adequate. All in all, these ski poles are reasonably durable and provide really useful features for those who spend a decent amount of time skiing inbounds.

10. Black Diamond Expedition 3

Black Diamond Expedition 3

Shaft Material: Aluminum

Shaft Diameter: 18mm/16mm/14mm

Basket Type: Powder

The Black Diamond Expedition 3 is the most recent iteration of this model. This pole is versatile enough for skiers or splitboarders, and can also be used for trekking and backpacking.

What we like about the Expedition 3 is that this pole’s foam grip is well-contoured and runs down the shaft for choking up when sidehilling. Its lever locks are easily adjustable with a small screwdriver, coin, or key, and solidly lock the shat sections into place. Its powder baskets provide plenty of floatation and remain soft to match the slope angle whenever you’re on steep, firm slopes. Besides, the handle has a hook-like tip that is great for flicking heel risers up and down.

The Black Diamond Expedition 3 offer a three-section design with an 18mm upper, 16mm mid, and 14mm lower, and a swing weight that is best for skiing deep powder and allows a ton of length adjustment, which makes this a good trekking pole. It has a minimum collapsed length of 57 or 62 cm, depending on the size that you choose. Its top handle features a small rubber pad that adds grip to allow you to push the top of the pole when in sections of steep climbing.

What we do not like about the Black Diamond Expedition 3 is that they aren’t as small as splitboarders would prefer once collapsed. Plus, because of the three-section design, the swing weight is felt when swinging the pole forward with each turn and can be an issue when making steep, tight turns. But overall, this is an inexpensive option for skiers and splitboarders. It is also good to use as a trekking pole and is one of the most versatile backcountry ski poles, available at an excellent value.

Best backcountry ski poles

11. Dynafit Speed Vario 2.0

Dynafit Speed Vario 2.0

Shaft Material: Carbon

Shaft Diameter: Unspecified

Basket Type: Powder

The Dynafit Speed Vario 2.0 is a reliable choice for a ski pole that is best for hitting fresh powder and backcountry runs.

What we like about the Speed Vario 2.0 is that this pair of ski poles weighs less than a pound, making it one of the lightest in its class. Plus, it has a push-button system to allow you to adjust the length from 105 to 145 centimeters, making it ideal for backcountry pursuits. It can also be packed in 41.3 inches in length. It is made of carbon, which is a lightweight and strong material, and delivers a responsive touch in harsh conditions. Its closure system utilizes friction to keep the shafts in place. Also, it is made with a 2K foam grip with EVA extensions to make it comfortable to hold. Finally, its wider range grip area and wrist straps allow for increased stability on a climb.

What we do not like about the Dynafit Speed Vario 2.0 is that the ultralight construction make this ski pole less durable than most poles in its category. Other than that, it is one of the best options for multi-day ski tours, long traverses, and most high-alpine pursuits.

12. Black Diamond Carbon Whippet

Black Diamond Carbon Whippet

Shaft Material: Aluminum upper, Carbon lower

Shaft Diameter: 14mm / 12mm

Basket Type: Powder

The Black Diamond Carbon Whippet ski pole is one of our favorite options for ski mountaineering in steep, icy terrains because of its excellent construction and features.

What we like about the Carbon Whippet is the clean and simple design. This model can be used as a backcountry ski pole and a light ice axe in steep terrains.

It is a three-section telescoping backcountry ski pole with an ice pick attachment that can be quickly screwed into place, and that can add security while booting up in steep snow surfaces and hooking on trees in icy skin tracks. The pick provides additional traction while traversing firm terrains. Its sections are designed with Black Diamond’s FlickLock, which enables it to lock securely. The tightening mechanism requires a small Allen key to adjust. The ice pick screws in place by hand and comes with a small rubber cap to cover the screw hole of the ice pick attachment. This pick provides adequate traction and security for ascents and descents. Its swing weight is adequate enough for a backcountry ski pole. Combined, the ski pole and the pick weigh 17.6 ounces, but the pick is removable so that you can carry it on your pack rather than adding weight to the pole during ascents. The Whippet pole packs down to a short 68 centimeters in length with the pick removed. It has a great swing weight, classic rubber grip shape and design, and its strap is comfortable and easily adjustable.

What we do not like about the Black Diamond Carbon Whippet is that its tightening mechanisms still require an Allen key for adjustment. Besides, a removable rubber plug has to be removed to screw the ice pick into place. All in all, the Whippet is a ski pole-ice axe hybrid, which is a great option for those looking to save weight in steep terrains. It is suitable for certain types of skiers and for bootpacking up a ridgeline.

It also features a performance rubber grip that fits nicely into the hands, and its 60-mm basket will keep your poles floating through powder and can power through, even in icy crud. It also has an adjustable strap to allow you to customize your fit for all-day comfort on your favorite downhill terrain.

What we do not like about the K2 Power Composite ski pole is that it doesn’t have any great features. However, it is still capable, has the stability for your all-mountain skiing antics, and offers a simple, comfortable, and effective downhill performance.

FAQs

What length of ski pole should I use?

The length of a ski pole is supposed to match with your height, but can also depend on its usage. For you to have good acceleration, a longer pole is better because it can improve power. On the other hand, shorter poles are most likely used when driving on mogul slopes to allow you to move more dynamically. Also, know that most touring ski poles are telescopic by design, so they can be adjusted to the respective slope inclination and are more ideal for deep snow, riding moguls, and half pipes.

When calculating a ski pole’s length, you should consider your upper body’s length, legs’ length, skiing style, and personal preference, so you will be able to determine what’s most appropriate for you.

When should you introduce ski poles?

It is best to introduce ski poles to children when they are at least 6 or 7, but it will also depend on the child’s technique and their ability to multi-task and handle the added responsibility. It is also best if your child can already steer, stop, and ski comfortably on most green and blue runs. A common occurrence when using ski poles, even among adults, is that they develop bad habits, like standing upright and keeping their weight too far back on the skis, which doesn’t allow them to develop good technique and balance.

Buying guide

We’ve listed down some of the things that you have to consider when buying ski poles, so you can maximize your skiing experience and level up your abilities.

FIT

Choosing a pole that is equivalent to your height and size is crucial to having a functional piece of equipment. Poles should be situated slightly below the armpit height. For measurement, turn your poles upside down, so that the point and basket are facing skyward while the grip is on the ground. Clutch the pole right under its basket, and see if your arm is bent at a 90° angle. The pole is most likely too short if your arm and elbow are outstretched beyond 90°. Meanwhile, it is too long if your elbow is more bent and your fist rests above your elbow.

MATERIALS

Ski poles can be constructed with many different materials, like bamboo, but they are typically made of aluminum — higher grade aluminum, carbon, or a composite of aluminum and carbon. Aluminum shafts may be the most basic type of construction that you’ll find in rental shops. Higher grade aluminum, composite, and carbon-based poles are of higher-end and are slightly more expensive. But pricy poles also come with better durability. In the end, it is up to you to decide the best balance when it comes to economy and durability.

STYLE

Ski poles come in various colors and designs. Although the designs have little to no importance on the performance of the ski pole, choosing designs and colors is an opportunity to express yourself and your personal style. So, do not be afraid to go bold or to match your pants, jacket, and skis for an awesome look on the hills.

GENDER

Men’s ski poles are mostly longer and come in many different styles.

Women’s ski poles are most likely shorter and offer smaller grips to accommodate females’ hands.

Kid’s poles are usually adjustable in length so they can still be used as the child grows, and provide smaller grips that will fit their hands.

BEST USE

All-mountain ski poles are made from aluminum to high-tech carbon fiber that mostly have a straight shaft, and are designed for skiers of all ages and abilities.

Freestyle ski poles are designed to be used at the terrain park and are much shorter for more maneuverability.

Racing poles have their own distinctive shape. Their different angles are to optimize power at the start of a run and for aerodynamics.

Backcountry ski poles are telescoping to allow for length adjustability based on the type of terrain.

Features

Strap

This refers to the flexible nylon loop that is attached to the pole, right at the top of the grip. Loop your wrists through the straps to prevent the poles from sliding down the hill in the event of a fall or if you drop the pole. Always remember to remove the straps and hold your poles in one hand whenever you’re getting on and off the chair lift.

Basket

This is a plastic disk located at the bottom of the ski pole and which sits just above the point. The goal of the basket is to keep the pole from sinking too far into the snow. Usually, wider baskets are for powder conditions, while smaller ones are for groomed terrains.

Powder baskets

These baskets are larger in diameter. Their increased surface will keep the pole from sinking too deep into the powder.

Standard baskets

These are smaller in diameter and are designed to be light. However, they are still capable of limiting the amount of the pole that can sink into the snow.

Grip

This refers to the sculptured handle that is just at the top of the pole, which you can hold onto. It is best to make sure that the grip fits comfortably in your hands and that it is soft and durable enough for you to hold onto it all day.

Telescoping poles

These poles are usually used by ski mountaineers or backcountry skiers. They can be extended for uphill climbs and retracted for steep descents. These kinds of poles are best if you choose to go into the backcountry, but are really unnecessary for those who spend most of their time in the resort.

Composite

Ski poles are made of different materials and designs, but a ski pole made with composite materials is usually the best and most versatile for resort skiing. The combination of metal and plastic materials will provide the best balance between weight and strength.

Guards

Pole guards can be an addition to protect your hands against impacts.

Conclusion

Having the correct size ski pole is essential. Indeed, if it is too long, it can cause a loss of control and responsiveness because you might ski in the back seat or on your heels, while a pole that is too short will result in being too far forward. However, a lot of new-school and freestyle skiers use shorter poles.

Higher-end ski poles give off better balance and a lower swingweight, which makes them more efficient. More expensive ski poles have more feasible grips that will fit the anatomical shape of your hands better. There is no downside in acquiring upgraded ski poles as they are used in every turn, and on every run. If you are an intermediate or advanced skier, it will be beneficial to have an upgraded pole.
