In hiking, the best thing to do is to be prepared and pack everything you need. There are types of hiking that do not involve packing numerous things on your backpack and all you need is a fanny pack. This is applicable for short hiking.

To wear and tighten a fanny pack, you should consider first the place where you are going to use it, the ways how to wear it, the reasons, and the methods. Fanny packs from different brands have sometimes a fixed size wherein, it may not fit your waist or hip size even if you adjust it.

Perfect Time to Wear a Fanny Pack

This type of gear is recommended to utilize on some occasions but if you like to use it casually, of course, you can. Mostly, this is created for an easy pack of portable items or your essentials. There are some instances that you don't want to bring huge packs because it will be a hassle when engaging in strenuous activities.

Fanny packs are perfect to use when hiking, running, biking, traveling, festivals, and sports events.

  • Hiking

It allows hikers to have easy access to the essential things they need. That will prevent you from stopping in places because you need to get the important things in your backpack. So wearing a fanny pack is really recommended for this activity.

  • Running

Since fanny packs are commonly worn around the waist, it won't bother you when running.  It is a perfect fit to choose smaller sizes as larger ones are still considered bulky.

  • Biking

Just like running, the best option to choose is the smaller fanny pack. Not all of the bike shorts have pockets so having this gear is an advantage to pack your stuff without slowing you down.

  • Traveling

This goes similar to hiking. It's a benefit to have this pack because it is lightweight and small compare to backpacks but that depends on what things you need to pack. A short trip does not require you to bring many things.

  • Festivals

This is an exhausting event so it's better to use fanny packs. It's inconvenient to bring huge backpacks in this situation so it's great to use this gear.

  • Sports events

There are some events that limit the people to bring bags and one of these is a sport event. So a smaller pack is the best option.

Different Ways to Wear a Fanny Pack

The different ways to wear a fanny pack is around your waist with the compartment at the back, facing it to the front, and hang it crossing your body with the use of shoulder straps. There are various styles that you can apply to how you wear this pack but we will focus more on the use of hikers. It's a benefit to packing your stuff.

Under the Waist

In hiking, the common way to use a fanny pack is to place the pack at the back of your waist. On the other hand, for large and medium sizes that allow you to carry water bottles, we recommend you to wear it with the same style as to how you wear it for hiking.

If you are going to use packs that are small and medium-size without packing water bottles, you can place the compartment in front. This is where you are packing the essential things. Wearing the fanny pack in front allows you to reach easily the things you are most likely to use. We suggest you to avoid putting a lot of items that your pack can't carry.

Across the Body

Another way to wear fanny packs is to cross over in your body. Large packs have shoulder straps that you can use on different styles but an advantage for hikers to change it over time if you put many items in the fanny pack which makes this gear heavier that is inconvenient to wear around your waist.

Reasons to Wear a Fanny Pack when Hiking

You should wear a fanny pack because of the following reasons:

  • it allows you to go hands-free,
  • have a pouch if you are wearing no pocket shorts or leggings,
  • carry your essentials when hiking,
  • has a lot of pockets where you can hide your important stuff,
  • prevent you from carrying heavy packs with your shoulder, avoid hitting someone with your backpack, and
  • halting you from putting your packs anywhere if you want to rest.

These reasons are applicable also even if you are not hiking. Without carrying any purse, you can do anything you want since your things are already in your fanny pack.

No Pockets or Bags? No Worries

Another reason is when you are wearing pants or shorts that don't have pockets like cycling shorts or leggings. This pack will serve as a substitute pocket for you.

Plus, you will not be struggling to carry bags. Traveling with your backpack for a long period will result in some pain sometimes and honestly, it is very exhausting to go around with it.

The build and design of the fanny pack are for you to bring only the essential things. If you are lazy and find it inconvenient to carry a backpack then this can solve your problem. You don't need to wear heavy bags if you are going for short hiking.

Additional Compartments

Another positive feature of this pack is the compartments. There hidden pockets that permit you to place significant items you want to bring.

There are times that you accidentally hit a person with your backpack, especially if it's overly packed so fanny packs will stop that to happen again. Lastly, it will prevent you from putting your bags if you are in a rest mode because it will just hang around your hips even if you are sitting.

How to Tighten a Fanny Pack

There are fanny packs that own a strap that is longer than your waist or hip size to use. It will make the pack saggy if it is not fit properly or tightened around the said area. Now, how can we fix this if there are no available packs with shorter straps?

To tighten the strap of your fanny pack, you just need to spread the strap and remove it from the buckle, adjust the long parts to the desired length then cut. The final step is to make the cut area firm by slightly burning it with a lighter or candle. You can easily do this on your own.

Step-by-Step Guide

First of all, you will need to prepare your fanny pack, scissors, and lighter or candles.

  1. Remove the strap from the buckle then spread it. You should be able to see the short part of the strap and the longer area where you can see the buckle and the hoops. Adjust the long strap to your desired size. Check it on the size of your hips so that it will fit perfectly when you use it.

  1. After you adjust it, you will see the excess strap after the ends of the buckle. That will show up if you connect the short part of the straps on the buckle so you should cut it. When cutting the extra parts, leave a few inches.

  1. The last step is to make the cut ends firm. This is the time you'll need the help of heat. If you have a long lighter, it is better but if you don't then you can use the common lighters and even candles. Burn the ends until the material looks stiff. Don't over burn it. Just heat the edge then there you have it.

How you wear a fanny pack will affect what type of activities you will be engaged in. If you will be carrying a lot of materials or water bottles, go for large size packs then wear it around your waist with the compartments facing the back.

For smaller and middle size, you can wear it in front of your waist.  We advise you to adjust the strap of your fanny pack to fit it appropriately on your waist so that it won't be a hassle for you to tighten when you are already hiking.
