Therm-A-Rest NeoAir

The Therm-A-Rest NeoAir Xtherm Inflatable Camp Bed is a lightweight double camp bed that is easy to inflate and deflate. It is equipped with Winglock Valve for 3-times faster inflation.  It is also a warm inflatable bed that can battle the cold surfaces when you are resting.

Let’s further discuss the features and performance of this camping bed based on the following topics: comfort and warmth, versatility, weight and packed size, ease of use, and durability. We will also be talking about the pros and cons of this camping bed to further help you decide whether this equipment is good for you or not.

Size:

Dimensions: 72” x 25” 2.5”
Weight: 1lb 4oz
Material: Nylon. Polyurethane
R-Value: 6.9

Verdict

During our evaluation of the NeoAir Xtherm, we concluded that it is a durable and compact type of inflatable bed. The top and bottom parts are made of nylon materials. This has also the capability to warm you up under cold weather conditions because it has a 6.9 R-value.

The size of this bed is a bit large but it is still perfect for backpacking because it only weighs 23 ounces.  Another praiseworthy feature of Therm-A-Rest structured with their products is the unique valves for air suction and deflation. For NeoAir Xtherm, they designed the so-called WingLock Valve for quicker inflation.

The contrasting sides of the features we enumerated are the price value and the limitations. This is really an expensive product and warm bed that is not suitable for intense hot weather conditions though you can still use it in light temperature.

We recommend this inflatable bed as a must-have product if you are going on camping, trekking, or hiking adventures.

One way of increasing the comfort level of your campsite is investing in a good camping mattress. There are tons of options out there to choose from, but if you want to get a quality mattress that will suit your needs, pick one from our top recommendations of the best camping beds and pads.

Comfort and Warmth

Usually, inflatable mattresses are built with a combination of materials to achieve the level of comfort that a person is seeking. Those sleeping pads are known to have a heavy weight but the Therm-A-Rest NeoAir Xtherm is one of the camping beds that break that perception. It can provide relaxation and has a lighter weight.

If you inflate this mattress, the thickness will increase up to 2.5 inches. The type of the bed’s width is not that airy or saggy-feeling just like what you can experience from other inflatable materials.

You will sense the compact and stability of the equipment because the internal composition is definitely thick. From our testing, we are really confident and comfortable when we rested on it. The top area is also made with non-slip fabric that can secure your sleeping position and prevent from falling out of bed.

Aside from the naturally thick feature, it can also cover you totally from cold weather because the R-value of this mattress is 6.9. R-value is a measurement of sleeping pads’ capacity to endure the heat. This means that the higher the value, the higher the temperature of the surface. We have encountered users of this bed and they told us that the NeoAir Xtherm is a reliable sleeping pad. Most of them are hikers.

The Triangular Core Matrix which is designed by the manufacturer is the reason why this became a warm type of mattress. With this technology, they used thermal foam to the layers which will be an alternate material air when you inflate it.

However, the idea of being a warm inflatable mattress limits the uses of this camping bed. We may not recommend this to be utilized under the intensely hot weather but it is an advantage during cold weather.

Versatility

The comfort and stability of a camping bed are the main factors that most people are looking for. Even if you can get a certain inflatable mattress with several positive features, there is no doubt that the equipment has some negative attributes. We praise NeoAir Xtherm but it has restrictions in the aspects of versatility.

We said that this camping bed has limited uses because we are pointing on side of the temperature. Based on its R-value, this inflatable camping bed is designed for cold weather. NeoAir’s R-value is considered high already that can battle cold surfaces and make you feel warm.

The downside of this feature is that we do not suggest this to be used under extremely hot weather. Imagine using a warm bed at a high temperature. That is very uncomfortable.

What we can praise in this equipment is the weight that allows you to bring it effortlessly. We will discuss this feature on the Weight and Packed Size section of this review.

The NeoAir Xtherm is also available in different sizes. You can have a regular size which has a measurement of 20 inches wide and 72 inches long. The regular wide goes 25 x 72 inches while the large is 25 x 77 inches.

Filling your air mattress can be done in several ways with the help of various tools. The most common way to inflate your mattress is with a pump. If you’re in a pinch, you can even use a hair dryer or your own breath to fill your mattress with air. Read our article to learn more about how you can inflate an air mattress while camping.

Weight and Packed Size

With the numerous sizes that this inflatable mattress has, we can say that the packed size of the regular mattress is quite huge. You can check Therm-A-Rest MondoKing 3D Self-Inflating Foam Camping Mattress if you are looking for a smaller packed size but, this is a heavy kind of camping bed.

We definitely admire the weight of this camping bed. Some camping beds with huge size also bears a heavy weight just like the MondoKing. However, the NeoAir Xtherm which is larger in size, only weighs 23 ounces or about 1.4 pounds. If you are looking for beds that you can carry around, this might be a solution to your problem.

For the size, this sleeping bed has a measurement of 77x 25 x 2.5 inches when inflated but 11 x 14.5 inches when packed. This is bigger than MondoKing which is only 10.3 x 26 inches.

The package comes with a pump sack, stuff sack, and repair kit if you buy one unit of this inflatable mattress.

The weight does not degrade the features of this bed. As we said in the Comfort and Warmth section, if you inflate the bed, we observed that the surface and the body are compact, thick, and sturdy.

Ease of Use

Therm-A-Rest, the manufacturer of NeoAir Xtherm and MondoKing has engineered their products with technology which is called Winglock and also Twinlock Valve.

The Winglock Valve is equipped in NeoAir Xtherm which can be located on the upper part of the bed. This valve is designed for faster inflation of the equipment. According to Therm-A-Rest, you can inflate the bed 3 times quicker compared to other common camping beds. Aside from the easy inflation, the valve also works vice versa when you deflate it that results in easy set-up and take down.

On the other hand, since we brought up MondoKing, this camping mattress has a Twinlock Valve which has two ways of airing. One valve for the inflation labeled as “in” and the other for the deflation labeled as “out”.

Remember that you can inflate this bed by blowing the air in using your mouth. That is an amazing feature since other inflatable beds require to be pumped to set up.

Over time and because of wear and tear, your mattress may leak air. This will not be a big deal as long as you know how to repair a leaky air mattress. We have a few tips and tricks that you might find useful if you ever find yourself in this situation.

Durability

When we tried the NeoAir Xtherm, we felt that it is made with durable materials. According to Therm-A-Rest, this camping bed is built with nylon. Nylon material is strong and can resist tears and damages from chemicals.

Based on the manufacturer, the top area of the bed where you can lay down is made of 30D ripstop nylon while the underparts are furnished with 70D nylon. D means denier. It is a measurement used to determine the strand’s thickness of a certain fabric. Meaning, high denier is equaled to thicker fabric.

Pros

These are the notable features that the NeoAir Xtherm hold:

  • Warm inflatable bed
  • Sturdy and compact
  • Lightweight
  • Easy to use because of Winglock Valve

Cons

Be reminded that you may experience these disadvantages:

  • Expensive
  • Not recommended on intense hot weather
  • Large packed size

Conclusion

The Therm-A-Rest NeoAir Xtherm is one of the laudable inflatable camp beds we have reviewed. This double camp bed’s lightweight feature is a highlight because this is a large size bed. Not all of the huge sized beds are light and easy to carry.

The setup is uncomplicated since this is powered with Winglock Valve that will make the inflatable action a lot faster and easier. But, bear in mind that we don’t recommend you use this under extreme hot weather conditions as this is a warm bed. You can utilize this comfortably during cold weather. If you consider buying this bed, the price is expensive, however, it can satisfy your needs.
